What I Wish I Knew About Google Business Profile for Notaries When I Started My Business

Smiling woman in gray sweats uses a laptop on a sofa in a bright waterfront living room.

One client said something to me years ago that I still think about.

We had just finished signing her documents at my dining room table when she smiled and said, "You know, I almost couldn't find you. I searched for a notary near me, and you weren't there. I only found you because my neighbor had your number."

That one sentence completely changed how I looked at my business.

I was dependable. I cared about my clients. I showed up on time and took pride in doing quality work. But I realized none of that mattered if people couldn't find me in the first place.

That night, I created my Google Business Profile. Within a short time, I started getting calls from people who had found me through Google Search. I hadn't become a better notary overnight. I had simply become easier to find.

If you're trying to grow your notary business, this is one lesson I hope you don't have to learn the hard way.

Why Every Notary Needs a Google Business Profile

If someone asks me for the one free marketing tool every notary should have, my answer is simple.

A Google Business Profile for notaries helps your business appear in Google Search and Google Maps when people are looking for local notary services. For a business that depends on serving people in a specific area, that's incredibly valuable.

Think about how most people look for services today. They don't usually flip through a directory or wait for a recommendation from a friend. They pull out their phone and search for phrases like "mobile notary near me" or "notary open now."

When that happens, Google decides which businesses to show.

Your listing is often the first impression someone has of your business. Before they ever visit your website, they may see your business hours, reviews, phone number, photos, and services. If your profile is incomplete or outdated, they may move on to the next option.

That doesn't mean the business with the best profile is automatically the best notary. It simply means they're easier to discover.

Setting Up My Profile Was Easier Than I Expected

Looking back, I wish I had done it much sooner.

The process itself wasn't difficult. I claimed my business, completed Google's verification process, chose Notary Public as my primary category, added my phone number, business hours, website, and service area, then wrote a short description of my services.

One thing I quickly learned was that a profile works best when it's complete.

Instead of leaving sections blank, I described the types of appointments I offered, uploaded professional photos, and made sure my contact information matched what appeared on my website and other business listings. That consistency made my business look more established and made it easier for clients to know they had found the right person.

If you're a mobile notary working from home, you don't have to display your residential address. Google allows eligible service-area businesses to hide their address while showing the areas they serve. That's a great option if you travel to clients rather than meeting them at your home.

As with every part of your business, make sure the information you provide accurately reflects how you operate. State laws and business requirements vary, so it's always worth reviewing your profile carefully before publishing it.

The Small Mistakes That Were Costing Me Clients

Creating my profile was only the first step.

When I looked at it a few weeks later, I realized it wasn't doing much because I had left out information that potential clients actually wanted to know.

My description was vague.

I hadn't uploaded many photos.

I wasn't asking clients for reviews.

Even my business information wasn't completely consistent everywhere online.

None of those mistakes seemed like a big deal on their own, but together they made my business look less active than it really was.

Once I updated everything, my listing became a much better reflection of who I was and the experience clients could expect.

That's something I think many new notaries overlook. Your online presence should make people feel confident enough to call you.

The Power of Real Photos and Honest Reviews

One of the easiest improvements I made was replacing generic images with real ones.

People like doing business with people.

A professional headshot, photos of your workspace, pictures from community events, or images that reflect your brand all help potential clients feel like they're looking at a real business instead of an empty listing.

Reviews had an even bigger impact.

I stopped hoping people would leave feedback on their own and started asking.

After each successful appointment, I'd send a short follow-up message thanking the client for choosing my business and inviting them to leave an honest review if they were comfortable doing so.

Some people did.

Some didn't.

That was perfectly fine.

Over time, those reviews became one of the strongest signals of trust on my profile because they reflected real experiences from real clients.

If you haven't built this into your routine yet, it's one of the simplest habits you can develop.

It's Not Just About Google Anymore

Search has changed.

People still type questions into Google, but they're also asking AI-powered search tools where they can find local businesses they can trust.

No one can guarantee that an AI assistant will recommend a particular notary, but the same things that make your business trustworthy in traditional search also help search engines better understand your business.

Keep your information accurate.

Maintain consistent business details across your website and directories.

Collect genuine reviews.

Answer common client questions on your website in clear, helpful language.

Those aren't shortcuts. They're simply good business practices that support your visibility wherever people search.

A Few Simple Habits Make a Big Difference

One of the biggest misconceptions about online marketing is that everything has to be updated constantly.

In reality, a few simple habits go a long way.

Every month or so, I take a few minutes to make sure my hours are still correct, my contact information hasn't changed, and my services accurately reflect what I offer. If I have a new professional photo or receive a review, I respond thoughtfully and keep my profile current.

You don't have to overcomplicate it.

An accurate, well-maintained listing is far more valuable than one that's been ignored for months.

Final Thoughts

Looking back, I don't wish I had spent more money on advertising.

I wish I had focused on being easier to find.

Creating my profile didn't instantly grow my business, but it gave more people the opportunity to discover it. From there, it was my professionalism, preparation, and customer service that helped turn those calls into loyal clients.

If you haven't created your profile yet, or if it's been sitting untouched for years, set aside an hour this week and give it some attention.

Complete the sections you've skipped.

Add real photos.

Ask a few satisfied clients for honest reviews.

Small improvements can make your business easier to discover, and that's often the first step toward serving more people in your community.
